Managing Home

Occasion: Inagural Ceremony of Home Science Department
Dear Embodiments of Atma!
Any growth has to culminate in decline or decay. All that is amassed has to culminate in dispersal or disposal. Good and bad, these twins are like lightnings hidden in clouds. But their root is one only. All these things keep coming and going on the curtain of temporal nature.
To learn about truth is the essence of spiritual practices. We feel sad when we think about the ever-diminishing span of life and about its non-returning prospect.
Today's thing of pleasure can be a thing of pain in the future. Depending on the circumstances of place and time; events, experiences and things appear to taste sweet or sour. It is the mind that creates liking or disliking towards people or things. Mind is an inconsistent and erroneous judge. Therefore it should be kept aloof from passion and prejudice.
Our vision must turn away from mean sensuousness, and must concentrate on things that are noble and worthy. The unity that is present in the diversity has to be grasped. Worthless desires must be curbed by the use of discriminating faculty. This is possible only through the Satvika quality. Therefore you should strive to wriggle out from the morass of Rajasika and Tamasika instincts.
Goddess Of The House
There is happiness only in the Satvika attitude. Wealth, fame and name—these things cannot provide lasting happiness. The water called character oozes out of the well called Satvika quality. Satvika quality therefore leads man to the status of Madhava (God).
The Department of Home Science had been introduced in this college today. I had inaugurated the Laboratory thereof. I had also reviewed its staff and the curriculum. The women of Bharat were naturally endowed with the art of home making and its welfare. In the present age this is given a big name like Home Science. This Home Science is immensely useful in bringing up children and in the aspect of serving other members of the family. This involves sharpening of tastes and skills. Woman has been extolled as Goddess of the house in our Puranas and Itihasas. She is considered as a leader in the path of righteousness; and as a trusted companion to her husband. She has been respected as a bright light in the house. These embodiments of motherhood have been responsible in the task of bringing up children in an atmosphere of truth, companionship, brotherhood, consideration, non-violence, and love. But unfortunately the modern woman is attracted towards western culture and is developing crazy ideas in emulating their way of living. With the result she is ever immersed in dissatisfaction and mental agony. She is leaving the task of children’s care to the maid servants. She is unable to manage her own house. She has no enthusiasm in spreading the fragrance of good practices that are conducive to prosperity.
A true education must equip the students with the power of self-confidence and must render them capable of discharging their own duties without depending on others. One should not go around offices using degrees as begging bowls. After the Atmic Bliss is tasted nobody will be inclined to derive happiness from these degrees and their benefits. Through this course of Home Science you should be moulded as sweet and efficient individuals. The housewife should be able to spread peace and joy to all family members, orderlies, and neighbors.
Sri Rama wanted to go to the forest alone; Sita then pleaded with him in a sweet manner, but, with words that were hard facts of righteousness; and she had succeeded in convincing Rama. She argued saying she would clear thorns and pebbles out of the path He trod. If Rama was moon she was like moonlight that could not be separated from him. “If a moon had left for the forest, the moonlight could not remain in Ayodhya,” she said. She accused him saying he was leaving her behind like a coward. At last she could win over him as a result of which, she was able to discharge her ordained duty and could establish her fame on earth.
Woman Is The Light Of Home
There is one God that grants all boons
Like the wish fulfilling tree
It is our paramount goal to realize Him
In this very human life that is the rarest gift.
Woman is the light of home, an angel that bestows transcendental bliss. She is expected to spend a spotless life while enhancing the prestige of parents as well as in-laws. She must bring all members of the family into the right path by using her subtle skills. The mother tells her child about God’s nature and his greatness. She tells the child that God is the sole motivator for the entire world. God takes human form and exhorts man the Atmic principle and protects man from the onslaughts of lust, anger and the like. Therefore, when the mother replicates and reflects these things at home, imagine how much God will be pleased!
The housewife must not give chance for laziness to come in her way of discharging household chores. She must put into practice the qualities of satisfaction, thrift, and humility; and must become a symbol worthy of emulation. Nothing should be wasted for the sake of over indulgence in comforts or merriment. The real home is where God resides in the hearts of all members. Human heart is a place for bad thoughts and attitudes. The fragrance that emanates from a divine home will quell bad thoughts and bad traits from the surroundings.
The very fact that you joined here is an indication of your resolve to eschew past and to emulate pristine qualities. Instead of stuffing your minds with all sorts of ideas, it is better to put into practice at least a fraction of what you learn. These days, there are plenty of people to preach but very few to practice. Some of the important vocational courses are going to be started soon in this college so as to enable students to support their families even while learning. Your principal had bid farewell to the old students and welcomed the new entrants.
I am concluding my discourse with a blessing and wish that all of you will emulate the ideals taught here and that you lead your lives blissfully.
