With Unity, Everything Can Be Achieved
Original Discourse Audio
May everybody live happy, may everybody lead a healthy life,
May everybody perceive goodness; no one should reap sorrow.
(Sankrit verse)
The world becomes verily heaven when people
Keep violence and criticism away,
Foster feelings of love, and
Consider all as one.
(Telugu poem)
Embodiments of love!
The culture of Bharat is most exalted, wonderful and blissful. It is based, not on ostentation, but on the internal Atmic bliss alone. The human life is associated with Divinity. Man’s most important duty is to experience this Divinity. One cannot be called a human merely by his / her physical appearance. ‘The proper study of mankind is man’. What is proper study? “Manasyekam, vachasyekam, karmanyekam mahAtmanam.” Oneness of thought, word and deed is known as “Trikarana shuddhi”.
Love Is One, Live In Love
From time immemorial, Bharatiyas have been incessantly endeavouring to foster this great culture. They loved Divinity. They gave up selfishness and strived to experience Atmic bliss. They endured a lot of hardships in this endeavour. Keeping this in view, sage Vyasa gave the essence of the 18 Puranas in two sentences, “Paropakaram punyaya, papaya parapeedanam” (One gains merit by helping others and commits sin by hurting them). Such sacred feelings have been fostered day by day in this country of Bharat since ancient times.
Unity is Divinity. Unity is the goal of human life. Man’s most important duty is to put it into practice. We experience happiness when our words, actions, and experiences are based on Truth. These days happiness is not found in human life due to lack of such unity of thought, word, and deed. Enjoyments there are. But what is the use?
“Nityananandam parama sukhadam kevalam jnana moortim, Dwandvateetam gagana sadhrusam tatwamasyadi lakshyam Ekam, nityam, vimalam, achalam sarvadi Sakshibhutam, Bhavateetam, Triguna rahitam Sadgurum tam namami.”
(The Atma, the true Guru, is called in various ways as the Embodiment of eternal bliss, Wisdom Absolute, the One without a second, beyond the pair of opposites, expansive and pervasive like the sky, the Goal indicated by the mahavakya ‘Tat twam asi’ ‘That thou art’, Eternal, Pure, Unchanging, the Witness of all functions of the intellect, the One beyond all mental conditions and the three gunas of satwa, rajas and tamas, the three qualities of serenity-purity, passion-activity, and inertia-indolence.) That Is Bliss.
“Ekam Sat vipra bahudha vadanti.” There is only One principle of Divinity; but, scholars describe IT in several ways. There may be any number of changes, but Truth is everlasting. In this mundane life, we are subjected to umpteen experiences, but all merge into a single aspect only. What is it? It is the principle of Love. We prepare Mysore Pak, Gulab Jamun, Barfi, Palakova, Jilebi, Mitai, and the like; but, when asked, “Which of these is greater?”, can anyone answer? There is only one common ingredient (sugar). Similarly, the same principle of Love is divided as mother’s love, wife’s love, children’s love, friends’ love, and so on. There is only love in each of them. Love is one. Live in love. In the present times, man is subjected to many types of sorrow because this basic principle of Love is dwindling. Everyone has problems. There is none in this world who is free from worries.
To be born is a worry; to be on the earth is a worry;
World is a cause of worry and death too;
Entire childhood is a worry and so is the old age;
Life is a worry, failure is a worry;
All actions and difficulties cause worry;
Even happiness too is a mysterious worry.
Devotion to Swami alone will put an end to all your worries.
Oh people! Develop such devotion and love.
(Telugu Poem)
It is because of these worries man is not finding happiness and is losing health also.
Complex Functions Of The Physical Body
No one can understand the marvels of God’s creation or God’s deeds. Take the case of blood for instance. A healthy man’s body has 5 to 7 litres of blood. But, this quantity is gradually going down, and so man is becoming weaker gradually. Along the blood vessels, water also flows. Water enters into the blood vessels gradually and mixes with the blood. Thus, the quantity of blood is maintained; but, its density reduces, and gradually it becomes thin.
As a matter of fact, the liquid called blood is a very complex mixture of components like red corpuscles, white corpuscles, and other fibrous entities called platelets. Each of these has its own specific function. (Red cells carry iron and oxygen to various parts of the body; the white cells protect the organism against microbes and external infections. The lymphatic fluid automatically protects any damages to the walls of the blood vessels).
Apart from this, some other problems are also faced. Think of it. In every millilitre of blood, there are so many red cells. They are gradually increasing. Along with this, white corpuscles are also formed. The white cells are very useful.
Who is responsible for the maladies and the corrective action that happen in the body? The heart beats at the rate of seventy-five times in a minute. Who has ordained this? No scientist or engineer has evolved this. This goes on in a spontaneous and natural manner. Who can comprehend the intricacies and marvels of Nature?
The stories of the Lord are most wonderful and sacred in all the three worlds.
They are like sickles that cut the creepers of worldly bondage.
They are most ennobling and elevating.
They confer bliss on the sages and seers doing penance in forests.
(Telugu poem)
There are other aspects too with regard to the Divine Principle.
What does a doctor do in a bypass surgery? He cuts a vein from a part of the body and attaches it like a wire. The bypass done in our hospital is of lasting nature. The patient may die of other reasons, but not due to this. But, the patient should observe certain disciplines and methods. The doctors should also give the patients proper advice and briefing while discharging the patient: “You should observe these ways, you should diet in this way” and such other guidelines.
Physical Body Is A Gift Of God; Look After It Properly
Every organ in the body has a unique role. Of all organs in the body, the heart is most important. In case the heart goes on ‘strike’ the whole body collapses.
The next one is the brain with which Dr. Hegde is associated. Here also there are subtle aspects. Nerves have a prominent role in the brain. The eye as such is a small instrument. There are lakhs of nerves (fibres) in it. There are thousands of taste buds in the tongue. Thus we see nerves play a vital role in the body. No one can count them. See how such a subtle creation has been made possible by God! This body is indeed a boon of God. This gift of God should be looked after properly by following His commands. The body must be protected well. Health is wealth.
Develop Unity
Man is struggling for wealth in many ways. It seems, there is no life without money. But, character is more important than money. Therefore, we must carry on our duties with good character as the main goal. We find differences between two doctors. There may be differences in opinions, but not in Atmic relationship. This feeling of oneness should be fostered in order to alleviate all troubles. This unity is Divinity. Purity is obtained only when this kind of unity is developed. Mutual affinity can be achieved by developing purity.
Embodiments of love!
Brotherhood of man and fatherhood of God has to be developed. But this also implies duality. Therefore, we must cultivate the feeling of oneness. There is only one Atma in you, in Me, and in others. When electric current passes through a tube light, it gives light. When it passes through the stove, food is cooked. When I am talking here, you are hearing it through the loudspeakers. So electric current is one, but its uses are many. Just because the current helps you in so many ways, you should not touch it out of gratitude, lest it would give you shock.
One must use the current in a proper way but not get into trouble by holding or playing with it.
Specialist Doctors Must Also Be Knowledgeable In General Medicine
A neurology doctor specializes only in neurology. Similarly, each specialist is confined to learn only one subject. One doctor says, “I am an ENT doctor.” Another doctor says, “I am an orthopaedic doctor.” In the name of specialization, they are dividing the body into many segments. We must strive to learn that which gives us the knowledge to treat the human body as a whole. With this system of segregation, patients are put to a lot of troubles. When someone approaches a cardiologist, he asks him (the patient) to go and get the blood tested. After going there, they ask him to get the urine tested; and undergo so many other tests. The patient is thus losing taste in life because of these endless tests. Therefore, one should strive to become a doctor who can treat all ailments. Most doctors are looking to their convenience, but in the process forget the convenience of the patient, with the result the patients feel harassed.
Speak Sweetly
In our hospitals, all must be united. All are brothers and sisters. They should not merely parrot upon ‘Fatherhood of God, and brotherhood of man’. The feeling of unity has to be developed. All are one, be alike to everyone. We must love everyone. There might be differences in thoughts and opinions, but they must be set aside. Unity must be fostered. Only then can the doctor and the patient be happy. How happy a patient becomes when he is showered with love! Your fame spreads all over the world through the patient after he leaves the hospital. “Oh, doctors of this hospital are talking so lovingly. They are so good. They look after us well,” they keep praising. We must learn to speak sweetly. You are all doing it; but sometimes it is slipping.
We should not harbour hatred towards anyone. With hatred no one can achieve anything, howsoever big he may be. Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha were extremely powerful. They could control the five elements. Hiranyakashipu was a great scientist. What could this mighty Hiranyakashipu achieve ultimately? - Nothing at all. The small boy Prahlada went on declaring that God pervades everything. ‘Ekam Sat, bahudha vadanti’. There is only One, not two. There is no two, without One. One plus one is two. How can two be formed without one? Prahlada had constantly chanted the divine name ‘Narayana, Narayana’, even while he was subjected to snake bites and elephant trampling, and when thrown off from the mountain top. Narayana took upon Himself all those dangers, saving Prahlada at every moment.
‘Yad bhavam, tad bhavati’. We can achieve sacred things with sacred thoughts. Be it men or women, all should consider themselves as siblings of the one Divine Mother. The five Pandavas achieved great things, due to their unity in the midst of all troubles. But, Vali and Sugreeva were two brothers who fought each other due to differences between themselves. The Pandavas, despite all hardships in the forests, could live happily with unity between them; whereas the Kauravas, with all the might of kingdom and with all comforts and ruling powers, could not get happiness because of their wickedness. Those with feelings of unity could achieve everything. We have nurtured this hospital with feelings of unity and oneness. There may be some differences of opinion. These are not important. For us Hridaya (compassionate heart) is important. Unity is necessary. There can be no limit to mutual help. With unity and purity, truth can be realized. But unfortunately, this kind of unity is not to be found anywhere else. With unity, there is nothing that cannot be achieved in the world.
Nurture The Hospital Like A Child
This hospital is a one year old child. This must be fostered carefully. For one year, the child is always safe in the cradle. But after one year, help is needed from someone to look after the child because the child runs here and there even while the mother is engaged in some work. The child may play with a knife or with electric current and bring troubles upon itself. So for five years the child should be looked after very carefully. Thereafter the child will be able to understand things.
Face Difficulties Boldly
It is not possible to get happiness without facing troubles. From hardship comes comfort. Therefore, we must consider hardships as friends. Some confusions or doubts may crop up. We must face them squarely and go ahead to achieve the aim. We must not be afraid of anything. Anything can be achieved with courage. You must consider this hospital as a small baby, and protect it by all means. Our Bharatiya culture has been fostered in this manner.
Forbearance is the real beauty in this sacred land of Bharat. The ‘nectarine’ feeling in this country is the feeling of love towards one’s mother. So, we must be able to bear any number of difficulties. Only he who can achieve this can be called a human being. Otherwise what is the use of being born as man? The aim of life is to face the difficulties boldly. Hurdles and sorrows of various kinds do occur. We must face them with fortitude.
Embodiments of Love!
All are watching the happenings of our hospital. Therefore, we must be vigilant. Also, there is the element of jealousy. We are rendering free treatment in our hospital. Why should we treat freely? All are our own brothers and sisters! Those who hanker for money will feel jealous of us. Whatever others may say, we must hold on to our heart.
Having resolved what ought to be resolved, hold on to it till you have succeeded.
Having desired what ought to be desired, hold on to it till your desire is fulfilled.
Having asked what ought to be asked, do not leave the hold till you get it.
Having thought what ought to be thought, hold on to it till you have succeeded.
With heart mellowed, the Lord must yield to your wishes.
With no thought of yourself, ask Him with all your heart.
Persevere, be tenacious, and never give up,
For it is the quality of a devotee never to retreat, abandoning the resolve.
(Telugu Poem)
Use Intelligence In A Proper Way
Therefore, whatever may happen, we must strive to achieve our resolve, without caring for success or failure. That is real life. We must be firm in achieving our aims. Only such a one is victorious, an ideal person to the world. You must nurture this hospital into an ideal hospital. An ideal hospital such as this cannot be found anywhere else. You do not have to worry about money at all. I shall take care of any amount of expenses. I am talking now only to impress upon you this. Some people doubt, how long this free service will survive. We shall be able to render free services for any length of time. Just now, we have deposited 300 crores in the name of our hospital, in a fixed deposit account. Whatever may happen, we should not leave it. We have also created a Capital Fund for the Puttaparthi Hospital. We have deposited 300 crores for this hospital. We may even increase it if necessary. We need not worry about money.
In India, there is a dearth of people who undertake good deeds. But truly, when we start doing something good, the whole world will stand by us. When Rama and Lakshmana went out in search of Sita, even monkeys and squirrels helped them. So when we embark on a path of truth, everyone will help us. Therefore we need not be afraid of anything. Let our hands be engaged always in giving, giving and giving; but never in taking. Only then you will get the deserved fame. Everyone that is born in Bharat is a giver, and not a receiver. How fortunate it is to be born as a Bharatiya! “Janthoonam nara janma durlabham–Among living beings, human life is very rare.” There are so many people in this world. There are so many animals and so many living beings. Does any specie possess the intelligence of a human being? Life becomes meaningful only if that intelligence is used in a proper way. There can be no one greater than such a person.
“Daivam manusha roopena – God is in human form.” You are human only in form, but in Atmic sense, you are Divine. Only in humans do we find compassion, love, patience and affection. Having been endowed with such noble qualities, why are we unable to achieve the goal? Anger, jealousy, and ostentation are not human qualities. All these are animal qualities. You all know that anger is the quality of a dog. So when you get a feeling of anger, you must tell yourself, “I am not a dog, I am man; I am not a dog, I am man.” Sometimes you get fickleness of mind. Then you should tell yourself, “I am not a monkey, I am man.” All the animal qualities have entered man. We should not entertain these animal qualities. They should be driven out forthwith. When we build a house, we provide windows to get good air. We provide gates and doors to allow our relatives and friends inside. But, do we allow any street dogs or pigs through the doors? Our mouth, ears, and other organs are the doors and windows to this body. All negative qualities must be driven out.
Make Use Of The Discriminative Knowledge In You
All of you know about Kaikeyi, the wife of Dasaratha in the Ramayana. Despite being a queen, she listened to the wicked counsel of Manthara, her own servant. She took Manthara’s anger upon herself. Thus she became a servant of her own servant. Finally, what happened? She not only lost her husband but also acquired a bad name. So from then onwards, has any woman called herself by this name of Kaikeyi? - No one. Even in men, we find such examples. Now, will anyone like to be called by the name of the wicked Ravana, who abducted mother Sita? No one likes to possess the name of a wicked one. Everyone wants to be called by the name of a good person.
Embodiments of Love!
You should entertain only goodness. We should not enter into arguments upon bad things. They should be put aside. All of you, along with you kith and kin, must lead a happy life. Live a long life, a happy life, and a healthy life.
You can explain clearly to anyone about our hospital. Out of ignorance, some people may have wrong notions. Our doctors and paramedical staff should explain them clearly. Our hospital follows the path of Truth, Righteousness, and Sacrifice. Our nurses and doctors are working with a sense of sacrifice. “Na Karmana, na prajaya Dhanena Tyagenaike Amrutatwa manasuhu”. (Neither by work, nor through progeny, nor through wealth, but only through sacrifice can one achieve immortality.) We must discard the bad and accept the good. That should be our endeavour. We eat fruits (phala) and excrete faeces (mala). In the same way, we must accept good things and discard bad things. That is the quality of discriminative knowledge in man. Man has within him such a power.
Adhere To Our Ancient Culture
Our Bharat has been protected by many great chaste women. Was not Savitri a Bharatiya woman, who could bring back to life her dead husband! Was not Chandramati a Bharatiya woman, who could douse an inferno with her power of Truth? Her husband King Harishchandra had gifted out the entire country to a sage. She considered her husband’s command as most important to her. One day he was in a sorrowful mood. She then said, “We have taken refuge in Truth. Therefore you need not worry.” She rejuvenated her husband’s resolve with those words of courage. There are many chaste and pious women in this Country of Bharat. There have been many women who could bring their dead husbands to life. But such a spirit of sacrifice is rare among men. Soon after the death of his wife, the husband gets ready for a second marriage. Savitri did not entertain such thoughts. She was ready to sacrifice her life for the sake of her husband.
This is modern age. People think that they are behaving in tune with this modern age. This is a great mistake. Ours is an ancient culture, which is being fostered since times immemorial. It should be adhered to under any circumstances. One may give up life, but Dharma should never be forsaken. This Dharma will protect us. ‘Dharmo rakshati rakshitaha – when Dharma is protected, it will protect us.’
Embodiment of Love!
You are doing good service. I am very happy about it. You as well as your relatives and families are all rendering good services as per their capacities. In the same manner, if everybody renders service with unity, our hospital’s fame will spread. But that is not My intention. I want you to get a good name for yourself. You must bring happiness to the world. That gives happiness to Swami. Swami is always happy. I have no sorrow whatsoever in Me. One gets sorrow only when one has desires. I have no desire of any kind, and so I have no sorrow. On the Birthday, they wished Me, ‘Happy Birthday, Swami!’ I said, ‘I am always happy. Give happiness to those who are not happy.’ We are the embodiments of happiness. Why should we expect happiness from others? Let us be happy always. Union with God is true happiness.
I am happy to note that some of the families of our doctors are doing good work. There are women who exhort their husbands, ‘Let us stay here even if we are to face difficulties, let us work in this place.’ Since women are endowed with many noble qualities, the culture of Bharat has always accorded a place of prominence to women. That is why a woman’s name comes first when we talk of a couple. In ‘Lakshmi Narayana’, the name of Lakshmi comes first, Narayana comes next. In ‘Parvati Parameswara’, Parvati’s name is uttered first while Parameswara comes next. So is the case with ‘Radha Krishna’. Not merely that. People always say, ‘This is my motherland’; and not, ‘My fatherland’. Therefore mother is most important. The country gets fame due to pious mothers. Even in ‘Mata, Pita’, mother comes first. This has been the tradition of this country since ancient times.
Embodiments of Love!
You need to develop this hospital in many ways. In case you face any inconvenience, you can tell Me directly. I will do whatever is needed. Do not be afraid of anything. Do not listen to others. Follow your own heart. Only then you will be able to achieve this. Swami intends to talk of each of you separately. It will happen in due course. You must consider this hospital as your life. This is your home. Do not leave this home. There may be some defects; but you must strive to adjust and set them right. You must achieve this in a spirit of happiness and you must spread the happiness of health to patients. Do not worry about the cost of medicines. Give them costly medicines. See that they are cured well and returned to their homes fast. You need not worry at all about the medicines or the equipment. You all know that the equipment we have in our hospital cannot be found anywhere else. It is all in your hand. I will get you whatever you want.
Seva (service) in the hospital is greater than anything. It is said, “Vaidyo Narayano Harih.” A doctor is like Narayana (God). He gives life. So our doctors must be ever ready to give. You must acquire this kind of fame. As it grows day by day, I wish to build a general hospital by the side of it. The reason is that the patients, after tests, have to travel a long distance to the hospital. In the general hospital, it is possible to segregate heart patients, neuro patients, etc. Very soon, I shall provide a general hospital, a school for children, and a playground for hospital staff to play Tennis, etc., in the evenings. I shall provide all facilities. There are many children, whose parents are struggling to send them to the city for education. We will establish a school here along with good teachers. I shall take responsibility for all these facilities. You do your duty. We have got all good people here. All of you must stay here and gradually develop this hospital into an ideal hospital.
Santosham (Happy)!
From Bhagawan’s Divine discourse on 26.01.2002
